In The Imitation Game, Alan Turing helps break the German Enigma cipher.
The 2014 film dramatizes the wartime codebreaking work of Turing and his colleagues at Bletchley Park. Turing helped design an electromechanical device called a bombe, which searched for Enigma settings and supported the decryption of German military messages.
The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing and Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke. It compresses and fictionalizes several events, so it should not be treated as a complete historical record. In reality, many mathematicians, linguists, engineers, and operators contributed to the Allied codebreaking effort.
Enigma, the cipher machine, is also sometimes confused with Lorenz, a separate German teleprinter cipher system. Colossus was a British electronic computer used chiefly against Lorenz traffic, while the bombe was a device used in work against Enigma.
