In “The Hunger Games”, Katniss uses mines to destroy the alliance’s supply cache.
The cache belongs to the “Careers,” tributes from wealthier districts who form an alliance and seize the arena’s central supplies. Katniss and Rue realize that removing this food and equipment will weaken opponents who are accustomed to comfort and have little experience surviving off the land.
Katniss observes that the District 3 tribute has reactivated land mines around the Cornucopia. She then shoots at a container of apples, causing them to roll into the minefield. The resulting chain reaction detonates the mines and destroys the Careers’ stockpile. She escapes the blast but suffers temporary hearing damage.
A common mix-up is saying that Katniss simply blows up the supplies with an arrow or bomb. Her arrows are only the trigger: the mines supply the explosive force. The scene also demonstrates her strengths as a hunter—observation, patience, archery, and improvisation—rather than direct combat.
