In "The Hunger Games", what district is Katniss Everdeen from?

The story behind the answer

In “The Hunger Games,” Katniss Everdeen is from District 12.

District 12 is Panem’s coal-mining district, located in the Appalachian region of what was once North America. It is one of the poorest and smallest districts, and Katniss grows up in the Seam, an impoverished section of the district’s main settlement. After her father dies in a mining accident, she becomes the primary provider for her mother and younger sister, Primrose.

Katniss’s knowledge of hunting and the woods around District 12 helps her keep her family alive. During the Reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, Prim is selected as the district’s female tribute. Katniss volunteers to take her place, beginning the chain of events that turns her from a survivor into a symbol of resistance against the Capitol.

District 13 is associated with the rebellion and nuclear-technology facilities, not Katniss’s original home. District 7 specializes in lumber, while District 1 is known for luxury goods. Although District 12 is later destroyed during the conflict, Katniss’s identity remains closely tied to it and to the mockingjay symbol.
