In "The Hunger Games", how often do the Hunger Games happen?

The story behind the answer

In "The Hunger Games," the Hunger Games happen once a year. The Capitol organizes the televised event as an annual punishment and political spectacle after the districts’ failed rebellion against its rule.

Each of Panem’s twelve districts must send two teenagers—a boy and a girl—chosen during the Reaping. The twenty-four tributes are taken to an arena, where they are forced to fight until only one survivor remains. The yearly schedule keeps the Capitol’s victory visible and ensures that every district repeatedly experiences fear and loss.

The 74th Hunger Games are the central event of the first story, with Katniss Everdeen volunteering in place of her younger sister, Prim. The annual pattern is disrupted by special editions called Quarter Quells, held every twenty-five years. These events introduce different rules, including the 75th Games’ selection of previous victors.

The Games are therefore not a monthly or occasional contest. Their regular annual timing is essential to the Capitol’s system of control, propaganda, and forced remembrance.
