In the Genesis flood story, Noah received seven days of warning before the flood began.
Genesis 7:4 records God announcing that the rain would begin after seven days. Noah, his family, and the animals then entered the ark, and the floodwaters came as described in the following verses. This short interval is separate from the forty days and forty nights during which rain fell.
That distinction causes a common mix-up. Seven days describes the final preparation period, while forty days and forty nights describes the duration of the intense rainfall. The narrative also gives other numbers connected with the flood, including 150 days during which the waters prevailed and the dates marking the ark’s eventual grounding and the drying of the earth. Each number belongs to a different stage of the story.
