In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, who was Noah’s father?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Lamech was Noah’s father. Genesis 5:28–29 places Noah in Lamech’s family line and says Lamech named him Noah, connecting the name with comfort from the painful labor caused by the ground’s curse.

Lamech appears in the genealogy from Adam through Seth, not in the separate line of Cain that includes another man named Lamech. This is a common source of confusion because both genealogical sections use several similar names.

The biblical flood story begins later, in Genesis 6, where Noah is described as righteous in his generation and instructed to build the Ark. Lamech is not presented as an Ark builder or as a passenger; Genesis says he died before the flood narrative reaches its climax.

Noah’s sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are then named as the next generation in the Ark story.
