In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, who built the vessel?

The story behind the answer

Noah built the Ark in the Genesis account of the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament.

Genesis presents Noah as a righteous man chosen to survive a flood sent to judge widespread human violence and corruption. God instructs him to construct a large vessel, bring aboard his family, and preserve representatives of the animal world.

The story does not describe Noah as a professional shipwright. Instead, the building project is part of his obedience to divine instruction. Noah’s sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are also named among those who entered the Ark, but Noah is the person identified as its builder.

The Quran also tells a flood story involving Noah, though its details and presentation differ from Genesis. The Ark narrative has influenced later Jewish, Christian, Islamic, literary, artistic, and archaeological traditions. Claims that a surviving physical Ark has been found have not been scientifically verified.
