In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, how many cubits long was the ark?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account of Noah’s Ark, the ark was 300 cubits long.

Genesis 6:15 gives the ark’s dimensions as 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of an adult forearm, so its exact modern equivalent is uncertain. Depending on the cubit used, the ark would have been roughly 135 metres long, though estimates vary.

The dimensions are presented as instructions given to Noah before the Flood. The text also says the ark had three decks and a roof or opening, but it does not provide a modern ship design or construction blueprint.

A common mistake is to convert the cubit into one universally agreed measurement. Ancient cubits differed by region and period, so modern reconstructions can only approximate the ark’s size.
