The player explores the Kanto region in the first-generation Pokémon games.
Kanto is the setting of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. The player travels through towns, routes, caves, forests, and seas while collecting the original Pokémon and challenging eight Gym Leaders. The journey culminates at the Pokémon League, where the player faces the Elite Four and the Champion.
The region's name is borrowed from the real Kantō region of Japan, which includes Tokyo and surrounding areas. Pokémon's Kanto is a fictionalized game world rather than a precise geographical map, but several locations and ideas reflect Japanese landscapes and culture.
Kanto is often confused with Johto because the two regions are geographically connected in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Johto is the setting of the second generation, whereas Kanto is the original region introduced in the 1996 games. Later titles revisited Kanto through remakes and sequels.
