What phrase does the name “Pokémon” contract?

The story behind the answer

The name “Pokémon” is a romanized contraction of “Pocket Monsters.”

The Japanese brand was originally written as Poketto Monsutā, meaning “Pocket Monsters.” The shortened international spelling uses an accented é, which distinguishes the name and signals the intended pronunciation of the second syllable.

The concept fits the original Game Boy design: players carry creatures in compact Poké Balls and can trade them through the Game Boy Link Cable. The name therefore connects the fictional creatures to the portable hardware that made the first games possible.

“Pokémon” is not an acronym, and it is not derived from the name of a particular creature. It became the global brand name for the games, anime, trading card game, films, manga, and merchandise that followed the 1996 Japanese debut.
