In the first Assassin's Creed game, Masyaf serves as the Assassins' headquarters under Al Mualim.
Masyaf is a fortified mountain settlement in modern-day Syria and functions as the center of the Levantine Assassin Brotherhood in the game. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad repeatedly returns there to receive missions, report to Al Mualim, and improve his equipment.
The game's other major locations are cities visited for investigations and assassination contracts, including Jerusalem, Damascus, and Acre. These cities are targets or mission areas rather than the Brotherhood's main base. Masyaf is therefore easy to confuse with the large urban settings, especially because the opening sequence begins there.
The game presents Masyaf as a fictionalized version of a real Syrian town associated with the historical Nizari Ismailis. Its mountain fortress gives the Brotherhood a defensible home and establishes the series' recurring contrast between hidden bases and crowded historical cities.
