In the first Assassin's Creed game, which Assassin is the player character?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the player character in the first Assassin's Creed game.

Released in 2007, the game follows Altaïr, a Syrian Assassin operating during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land. The story takes him to cities including Masyaf, Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem, where he investigates targets connected to the Templar Order.

Altaïr begins the game as a highly ranked but overconfident Assassin. After violating the Brotherhood's rules, he is stripped of his rank and must complete a series of missions to regain his standing. His mentor, Al Mualim, directs much of his early journey.

Players sometimes confuse Altaïr with Ezio Auditore, the hero of the next major storyline. Ezio stars in Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations, while Altaïr returns prominently in Revelations. Altaïr's name means “the flyer” in Arabic, and his story established many of the series' recurring themes, including stealth, historical investigation, and the conflict between Assassins and Templars.
