In the first Assassin's Creed game, released in 2007, which character is the playable Assassin?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the playable Assassin in the first Assassin's Creed game, released in 2007.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin who serves as the central historical character in the game's medieval storyline. The player follows his missions during the Third Crusade, mainly across the cities of Masyaf, Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem. His actions are experienced through Desmond Miles, a modern-day man connected to Altaïr through the Animus.

Altaïr begins the game as an exceptionally skilled but arrogant Assassin. After failing a mission, he is demoted and must regain his rank by completing assignments for the Brotherhood. This progression explains why the game presents his abilities and equipment as being restored over time.

Ezio Auditore is the lead character of Assassin's Creed II and later games, while Connor Kenway stars in Assassin's Creed III. Desmond is the modern-day protagonist who relives Altaïr's memories, but he is not the medieval playable Assassin himself.
