A wampa attacks Luke Skywalker on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
After the Rebel Alliance evacuates its base, Luke travels across the frozen planet on a tauntaun. A wampa ambushes him, carries him to its icy lair, and hangs him from the ceiling. Luke escapes by using the Force to retrieve his lightsaber and then wounds the creature.
The wampa is a large, white, carnivorous creature designed to fit Hoth’s harsh environment. The sequence establishes the dangers of the planet before Luke begins his journey to Dagobah for Jedi training.
The creature is often confused with a tauntaun, which is the domesticated animal used by the Rebels for transport. Both are native to Hoth, but the tauntaun is Luke’s mount and the wampa is his predator. The film was released in 1980 as the second episode produced in the original Star Wars trilogy.
