In the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Chapter 125 contains the deceased’s judgment before Osiris. It is one of the text’s best-known sections because it describes the Hall of Two Truths and the weighing of the heart.
The deceased declares innocence before a tribunal of divine judges, while Anubis oversees the scales. The heart is weighed against the feather associated with Ma’at, the principle of truth and cosmic order. Thoth records the result, and Osiris presides over the judgment.
Chapter 125 is often called the “Weighing of the Heart” chapter, although surviving papyri vary in wording and arrangement. It is also linked with the Negative Confession, in which the deceased denies committing specific wrongs. The chapter was not a single standardized script; scribes adapted funerary texts for individual owners.
