In "The Dunwich Horror," what university does Henry Armitage serve as librarian for?

The story behind the answer

In “The Dunwich Horror,” Henry Armitage serves as librarian of Miskatonic University.

Armitage is the university’s head librarian in the story, which H. P. Lovecraft wrote in 1928 and published in Weird Tales in April 1929. Miskatonic University is located in the fictional Massachusetts town of Arkham and appears throughout Lovecraft’s fiction as a center of scholarship and occult lore.

The university library is crucial to the plot because it holds one of the few copies of the Necronomicon. Wilbur Whateley travels to Arkham to consult or obtain it, but Armitage refuses access and warns other libraries about Whateley’s intentions. Armitage later joins Professors Warren Rice and Francis Morgan in confronting the Dunwich Horror.

A common mix-up is to choose Harvard or Brown, real New England universities that helped inspire Lovecraft’s fictional institutions. Miskatonic, however, is the canonical answer in the story.
