In 'The Children of Men', what is the name of the protagonist?

The story behind the answer

In P. D. James’s The Children of Men, the protagonist is Theo Faron.

Theo, formally Theodore Faron, is an Oxford academic living in an England where a worldwide fertility crisis has made humanity’s extinction seem inevitable. The novel is set in 2021, after the last generation of children—known as Omegas—has grown up and society has surrendered much of its political freedom.

Theo is initially detached and cynical, but his former student Julian draws him into the activities of the Five Fishes, a dissident group opposing his cousin Xan Lyppiatt, England’s authoritarian Warden. Theo’s involvement deepens when Julian reveals that she is pregnant, an event that could restore hope to a sterile world.

A common mix-up comes from Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film adaptation, in which Clive Owen plays Theo Faron. The film changes major characters, events, and details from the novel, including Julian’s role and the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy. The protagonist’s name remains Theo, but the book and film should not be treated as identical versions of the story.
