The British TV series Dragons' Den is based on the Japanese programme Money Tigers.
Money Tigers was a Japanese television format in which entrepreneurs presented business proposals to wealthy investors. The format created the central structure later used by Dragons' Den: a founder makes a funding request, explains the business, and negotiates with investors over ownership.
The British adaptation changed the branding and called its investors Dragons, but the underlying pitch-and-equity mechanism remained recognisable. The format was subsequently adapted in numerous countries, including the United States, where it became Shark Tank.
Money Tigers is sometimes confused with Dragon's Den or Shark Tank because those titles are better known internationally. However, Money Tigers is the originating Japanese programme, while Dragons' Den is the name used by the British and several other adaptations.
