The investors on the British TV series Dragons' Den are officially called Dragons.
Entrepreneurs enter the den to present their businesses to a panel of wealthy investors. They usually request a specific amount of money in return for a stated percentage of equity, although negotiations can produce different terms or no deal at all.
The title's dragon imagery gives the panel its collective name. It also distinguishes the British programme from the American version Shark Tank, where the investors are called Sharks. Other international versions use different animal imagery or local titles, which can cause confusion when people discuss the franchise.
The word Dragon describes the investor role, not a single individual. Panel members have changed across the programme's history, while the name has remained part of the format. A person who pitches is normally called an entrepreneur or pitcher rather than a Dragon.
