Duncan Bannatyne was the founder of the care-home company Quality Care Homes before becoming an original dragon on the British television show Dragons' Den.
Bannatyne entered business through ventures that included ice-cream vans and leisure-related activities, then expanded into larger companies. Quality Care Homes was part of his move into the care sector and helped establish his reputation as a substantial entrepreneur before his television career.
His business portfolio later included hotels, health clubs and spas through the Bannatyne Group. That breadth is why the care-home company can be overlooked: many viewers primarily associate him with fitness clubs or with his years as a television investor.
The fact also illustrates that the dragons did not come from a single industry. Their backgrounds covered retail, telecommunications, care, leisure and other fields. Quality Care Homes specifically identifies Bannatyne, rather than fellow original dragons Theo Paphitis or Peter Jones.
