Alan Sugar is the founder of the Amstrad electronics company and a longtime business personality associated with British television.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968, with the name formed from his initials and the word trading. The company first sold electronic goods and later became especially famous for home computers, including the Amstrad CPC range launched in the 1980s. Amstrad also entered the satellite television market.
Although Alan Sugar is widely associated with The Apprentice rather than Dragons' Den, the question explicitly concerns his business identity in relation to the broader British television business landscape. A frequent mistake is to confuse him with Peter Jones, another well-known technology-focused Dragon.
Sugar was knighted in 2001 for services to business. Amstrad was acquired by BSkyB in 2007, bringing the company under the ownership of the satellite broadcaster while Sugar continued to be recognised as its founder.
