In the British television series Dragon's Den, what is the name for an entrepreneur's presentation to the investors?

The story behind the answer

In the British television series Dragon's Den, an entrepreneur's presentation to the investors is called a pitch.

A pitch is the central performance in the programme. The entrepreneur explains the product or service, states how much money is wanted, and offers a percentage of the business in return. The investors then question the entrepreneur about sales, costs, valuation and future plans.

The word “pitch” is standard business language outside television too. It describes a concise attempt to persuade someone to support an idea, product or company. Dragon's Den made the term especially familiar to general audiences by placing it inside a dramatic negotiation format.

The pitch should not be confused with the final deal. An investor may make an offer during the pitch, but the agreement is normally subject to further checks after filming. A televised offer therefore does not always become a completed investment.
