In the Book of Genesis, how many people survived the Flood aboard Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to the Book of Genesis, eight people survived the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark.

Genesis names Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the wives of those three sons. Together, this household forms the complete human group preserved in the ark narrative. The text does not give the women’s personal names.

This number is sometimes confused with the animals preserved aboard the vessel, but the eight refers only to human survivors. The New Testament also uses the phrase “eight souls” when referring to those saved through the Flood. Other ancient flood stories have different survivor numbers and characters, so the figure belongs specifically to the Genesis account.

After the waters recede, Noah’s family leaves the ark and is presented as the beginning of humanity’s repopulation in the biblical story. The account then describes God’s covenant with Noah and the sign of the rainbow.
