Noah built the ark in the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In Genesis, God commands Noah to construct a large vessel because a flood will destroy living things on the earth. Noah follows the instructions and brings his family and animals aboard.
The story presents Noah as a righteous man who receives a divine warning before the flood. His three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—also enter the ark, along with their wives. Genesis describes the ark’s construction as a major act of obedience rather than a short emergency project.
Noah is also the central human figure in related flood traditions. The Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh features Utnapishtim, who builds a boat after being warned of a flood, but Utnapishtim is not the biblical ark’s builder. In the Hebrew Bible, the builder is specifically Noah.
