In the biblical Book of Genesis, who built Noah’s Ark under God’s instructions?

The story behind the answer

Noah built the Ark under God’s instructions in the biblical Book of Genesis.

Genesis presents Noah as a righteous man chosen to survive a catastrophic flood with his family and representatives of the animals. God gives him detailed instructions for constructing the vessel, sealing it, and stocking it with food. Noah follows those commands, and the narrative repeatedly emphasizes his obedience.

The Ark is therefore associated with Noah as its builder, although Genesis does not describe him working entirely alone. His wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives also enter the vessel. The text does not name Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law.

Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions expand the story in different ways. Genesis remains the principal biblical source for the Ark narrative, while the Quran also describes Noah’s vessel but uses different wording and details. Noah should not be confused with Utnapishtim, the flood survivor in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
