In the biblical Book of Genesis, how many people entered Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to the Book of Genesis, eight people entered Noah’s Ark: Noah, his wife, his three sons, and his sons’ three wives.

Genesis 7:13 describes Noah entering the Ark with Shem, Ham, Japheth, Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons. The account therefore gives a total of eight human occupants. The New Testament also refers to “eight souls” being saved through the Flood in 1 Peter 3:20.

This number concerns people, not animals. The Ark’s animal passengers are described separately, and the biblical text does not provide one simple total for every animal aboard. The eight-person figure is also distinct from later traditions that expand the story with additional names or details not found in Genesis.

The phrase “Noah’s family” can sometimes be used loosely, but the specific biblical count is eight. This is one of the clearest numerical details in the Ark narrative.
