In the biblical account of Noah’s Ark, who built the ark under God’s instructions?

The story behind the answer

Noah built the ark under God’s instructions in the biblical account of Noah’s Ark.

In Genesis, Noah is described as a righteous man living in a violent world. God tells him to construct a large vessel from gopher wood, divide it into compartments, and coat it with pitch so it will resist water. Noah is instructed to bring his family and representatives of the animals aboard.

The story places Noah at the center of the flood narrative, but it does not present him as the inventor of the vessel’s design. The measurements, decks, opening, and entryway are given as divine instructions. Noah’s sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—help form his household, but Genesis identifies Noah as the person who builds the ark.

Noah’s Ark is a religious narrative in Genesis chapters 6–9 and also appears in Islamic tradition, where Noah is called Nuh. The biblical account should not be confused with later flood stories from Mesopotamia, which feature different heroes and vessels.
