In the biblical account of Noah’s Ark, how many decks did the ark have?

The story behind the answer

In the biblical account of Noah’s Ark, the ark had three decks.

Genesis instructs Noah to make the vessel with lower, second, and third decks. This is separate from the ark’s overall dimensions, which Genesis gives as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

The decks would have divided the enormous enclosed vessel into levels, although Genesis does not provide a modern floor plan or explain how the animals were arranged. The text mentions rooms or compartments, a door in the side, and a covering or opening near the top.

Artists and builders have supplied many different interior designs because the biblical account leaves practical details unspecified. The three-deck description itself is clear, however. It should not be confused with the three sons who accompanied Noah or with later traditions that add architectural features not stated in Genesis.
