In the BBC television series Dragon's Den, who presented the programme from its first episode until 2013?

The story behind the answer

Evan Davis presented the BBC television series Dragon's Den from its launch in 2005 until 2013.

Davis was the programme's original presenter. In the early format, he introduced entrepreneurs, explained the investment proposals, and linked the filmed pitches for viewers. The dragons themselves questioned the contestants and decided whether to make offers.

Davis is also widely known for presenting BBC economics and current-affairs programmes. He became editor of the BBC programme Newsnight in 2014, after leaving Dragon's Den. His role is sometimes confused with that of the narrator or with the investors, but Davis was the on-screen presenter rather than a dragon.

The UK edition later continued with changes to its presenting arrangements and production style. The core premise remained the same: entrepreneurs sought investment by pitching businesses to a panel of wealthy investors, usually in exchange for an equity stake.
