Rachel Elnaugh became the first female Dragon on the BBC programme Dragon's Den.
Elnaugh joined the original investor panel when the British version launched in 2005. She was known as the founder of Red Letter Days, a company selling experience gifts such as driving days, spa visits and other unusual activities.
Her business background made her a natural fit for a programme built around entrepreneurs pitching for investment. Elnaugh left the main panel after the first series, and Deborah Meaden later became one of the programme's most recognisable female investors. This sometimes causes viewers to remember Meaden as the first woman on the show, but Elnaugh holds that distinction.
Elnaugh's tenure is also associated with the early formation of the programme's investor lineup, before the panel became more familiar to long-term viewers. The title “Dragon” refers to the wealthy investors who assess each business proposal; it is not the name of a company or competition winner.
