In the BBC business show Dragon's Den, in which year did the first series premiere?

The story behind the answer

The first series of the BBC business show Dragon's Den premiered in 2005.

The British programme is based on the Japanese format Money Tigers, known in Japan as Manē no Tora. Entrepreneurs present business proposals to a panel of wealthy investors, called Dragons, and seek money in exchange for an ownership stake.

The programme became a long-running BBC property after its 2005 launch. Its early panel included Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Theo Paphitis, Rachel Elnaugh and Simon Woodroffe, although the lineup changed over time.

The show's launch year is sometimes confused with the launch dates of international versions, including Canada's Dragons' Den, which began later. The BBC programme's first series is firmly associated with 2005.
