In the arcade game Out Run, what sports car does the player drive?

The story behind the answer

In the arcade game Out Run, the player drives a Ferrari Testarossa.

Sega released Out Run in 1986, with Yu Suzuki serving as its designer. The game places the player in a red convertible sports car with a passenger, racing through branching scenic routes while a time limit counts down.

The car was modeled on the Ferrari Testarossa Spider, a rare open-top version associated with Ferrari. Sega’s use of the Ferrari identity helped give Out Run a strong sense of luxury and road-trip fantasy, rather than presenting the vehicle as a generic racing machine.

Out Run is often remembered simply as a Ferrari game, but the specific model is the Testarossa. It is also easy to confuse the game with later arcade racers that featured licensed cars, motorcycle racing, or closed circuits instead of Out Run’s branching routes.
