In the anime, Falkner is the first Johto Gym Leader Ash battles. Falkner leads the Violet City Gym and specializes in Flying-type Pokémon, making him Ash's first official Gym opponent after the journey moves into Johto.
Their battle is featured in “Fighting Flyer with Fire,” an episode of the Johto Journeys era. Ash eventually defeats Falkner and earns the Zephyr Badge, his first Johto League Badge. The contest is a three-on-three battle, and Pikachu plays an important role despite Falkner's focus on Flying-types.
Viewers sometimes confuse Falkner with Bugsy, Whitney, or Morty because all four are prominent Johto Gym Leaders. However, the anime follows the same broad Gym sequence as the Johto games: Falkner in Violet City, Bugsy in Azalea Town, Whitney in Goldenrod City, and Morty in Ecruteak City.
Falkner is also notable for inheriting the Violet Gym from his father and for using bird Pokémon in battle. His Gym challenge establishes the Johto region's identity early, combining traditional badge competition with the anime's more character-driven battles.
