In the Amazon TV series Jack Ryan, the character is based on a creation by author Tom Clancy.
Clancy introduced Jack Ryan in his 1984 thriller novel The Hunt for Red October. Ryan is portrayed as a highly capable CIA analyst whose expertise in history, economics, intelligence, and geopolitics repeatedly draws him into international crises.
The Amazon series premiered in 2018 and stars John Krasinski as Ryan. Although it uses characters and ideas from Clancy’s fictional Ryanverse, the show generally tells an updated, original serialized story rather than directly adapting one novel from beginning to end.
A common mix-up is confusing Tom Clancy, the character’s creator, with Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, who developed the television adaptation. Clancy died in 2013, several years before the series premiered.
