The film follows the three Minions as they search for a new supervillain to serve after their species repeatedly loses its masters. At Villain-Con in Orlando, they meet Scarlet Overkill, an ambitious criminal who wants to become the world’s first female supervillain.

Scarlet sends the trio to steal Queen Elizabeth II’s crown. Their mission connects the fictional Minions’ comedy with a colorful version of 1960s Britain. Scarlet is voiced by Sandra Bullock, while her husband Herb Overkill is voiced by Jon Hamm.

Scarlet Overkill is separate from later franchise villains. El Macho appears in Despicable Me 2, Balthazar Bratt is the antagonist of Despicable Me 3, and Wild Knuckles appears in Minions: The Rise of Gru. Those characters are common mix-ups because they all occupy the supervillain role.
