The playable Assassin in the 2007 video game Assassin's Creed is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.
Altaïr is the central character of the original Assassin's Creed, set mainly during the Third Crusade in the late 12th century. The story follows his loss of status within the Assassin Brotherhood and his efforts to regain it by carrying out missions across the Holy Land.
The game presents Altaïr through a science-fiction framing device: Desmond Miles experiences his ancestor's memories using the Animus. This structure connects the medieval story to a modern-day conflict between the Assassins and Templars.
Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed II and its two direct follow-ups. Altaïr also appears in later franchise lore, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which explores his life after the first game. His name is commonly rendered with different apostrophe and diacritic styles, but Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the standard English form.
