In the 1993 film Jurassic Park, a Dilophosaurus attacks Dennis Nedry near his stranded Jeep.
Nedry, played by Wayne Knight, is the park’s disgruntled computer programmer. He secretly attempts to steal dinosaur embryos for a rival company, but his escape is interrupted when a storm and a locked security gate leave him stranded on Isla Nublar.
The film portrays the Dilophosaurus as a small, colorful dinosaur with a neck frill and the ability to spit venom. These traits make the scene especially memorable, but the frill and venom are fictional additions rather than securely established features of the real animal. The dinosaur’s real fossil record indicates that Dilophosaurus was substantially larger than the movie version.
The scene also differs from the novel, where Nedry encounters a different dinosaur during his escape. The film’s combination of rain, darkness, the Jeep’s malfunctioning windshield wipers, and the sudden frill display helped make the Dilophosaurus one of the franchise’s best-known creatures.
