In the 1993 film Groundhog Day, which actor plays weatherman Phil Connors?

The story behind the answer

In the 1993 film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray plays television weatherman Phil Connors.

Directed by Harold Ramis and co-written by Ramis and Danny Rubin, the film follows Phil as he covers the February 2 festivities in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. After a blizzard strands him there, he awakens to the same day repeating endlessly. The role combines Murray’s dry comic timing with a character arc in which Phil gradually becomes less cynical and more compassionate.

The film also stars Andie MacDowell as producer Rita Hanson and Chris Elliott as cameraman Larry. Chevy Chase, Tom Hanks, and Michael Keaton were among the actors considered or associated with the role during development, which explains why they can seem like plausible quiz answers. Despite the Pennsylvania setting, much of the movie was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. In 2006, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry.
