In the 1982 film The Thing, what is the name of the American research station?

The story behind the answer

In the 1982 film The Thing, the American research station is called Outpost 31.

Outpost 31 is an isolated United States Antarctic research facility occupied by a small winter team. The station includes scientists, mechanics, support staff, and helicopter pilot R. J. MacReady, played by Kurt Russell. Its remoteness makes communication and rescue difficult, turning the base into a closed environment where suspicion spreads rapidly.

The crisis begins when a Norwegian helicopter pursues a sled dog toward the American station. After the dog is taken inside, it transforms into the Thing and assimilates other organisms. The researchers eventually realize that the creature can imitate life forms perfectly, making blood tests and personal trust matters of survival.

Outpost 31 is often confused with real Antarctic facilities such as McMurdo Station or Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. Those are genuine research stations; Outpost 31 is the fictional base created for John Carpenter’s film.
