In Moonraker, James Bond escapes from a cable car by using a gondola in Venice.
The escape occurs during the Venice section of the film, after Bond is pursued through the city’s waterways and streets. A gondola is a traditional Venetian boat, normally propelled by a gondolier with a single oar. Moonraker turns this familiar form of transport into part of an elaborate chase and escape sequence.
The scene is often remembered alongside Bond’s other unusual vehicles, including the film’s gondola fitted with hidden mechanical equipment. The vehicle is not the same as the cable car from which Bond escapes; the cable car is the aerial transport, while the gondola carries him through Venice below.
Moonraker was the eleventh official Eon-produced Bond film and moved much of its action between Venice, Rio de Janeiro and outer space. Its vehicle sequences deliberately mix real local transport with exaggerated spy technology.
