In the 1965 film The Sound of Music, Captain Georg von Trapp’s family has the surname von Trapp.
The film centers on Captain von Trapp, a widowed naval officer, and his seven children. Maria, a postulant who becomes their governess, gradually brings music and warmth back into the household before marrying the captain.
The story is set in Austria shortly before the Second World War. The family’s escape from Austria after the Anschluss forms the historical backdrop for the final part of the film, although the movie takes substantial dramatic liberties with the real family’s story.
Christopher Plummer played the captain, and Julie Andrews played Maria. The von Trapp family’s singing is central to the film, especially in songs such as “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss.”
