In Star Wars, what is Darth Vader’s birth name?

The story behind the answer

In Star Wars, Darth Vader’s birth name is Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin begins the saga as a gifted Force-sensitive child who becomes a Jedi Knight. His fear of losing people he loves, manipulation by Chancellor Palpatine, and turn to the dark side eventually transform him into Darth Vader.

The original trilogy reveals that Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father. The prequel trilogy then tells Anakin’s earlier life and shows how he becomes Vader after suffering severe injuries and receiving life-support armor.

Anakin’s story makes him central to the Skywalker family saga. He is also the father of Luke and Leia, although their family relationship is hidden from them for much of the original trilogy. The name Darth Vader is therefore a title and identity adopted after his fall, not his birth name.
