In "Star Wars: Episode III", who does Palpatine say killed Padme?

In Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Darth Vader that Vader killed Padmé.

After Obi-Wan Kenobi defeats Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, Palpatine rescues him and oversees his transformation into Darth Vader. When Vader awakens in the life-support suit and asks about Padmé, Palpatine says that it seems Vader killed her in his anger.

The statement is manipulative and only partly truthful. Vader did attack Padmé and nearly killed her by Force-choking her during their confrontation on Mustafar. However, Padmé survived that encounter long enough to give birth to twins, Luke and Leia. She died shortly afterward, and the medical droid attributed her death to a loss of the will to live.

A common mix-up is crediting Obi-Wan with Padmé’s death because he defeated Anakin, or saying Palpatine simply announced that she was already dead. The film’s crucial wording places the blame on Vader, helping cement his guilt and dependence on Palpatine.
