In 'Star Trek', what is the name of the starship registry number NCC-1701?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek, registry number NCC-1701 identifies the USS Enterprise, the Constitution-class starship commanded most famously by Captain James T. Kirk. It is the principal vessel of the original Star Trek television series and several feature films.

The Enterprise is introduced as an exploration ship on a five-year mission to investigate strange new worlds and encounter new life and civilizations. Its design, created for television by Matt Jefferies, features a saucer-shaped primary hull, a secondary hull, and two warp nacelles. That silhouette became one of science fiction's most recognizable spacecraft designs.

NCC-1701 refers specifically to the original Enterprise, not every ship named Enterprise. Later vessels use suffixes such as NCC-1701-A and NCC-1701-D. The USS Reliant, USS Defiant, and USS Voyager are separate Starfleet ships with different missions and registry numbers. The original Enterprise first appeared in Star Trek in 1966.
