In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which city do Kirk and his crew visit to find humpback whales?

The story behind the answer

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Kirk and his crew visit San Francisco to find humpback whales.

The crew travels from the 23rd century back to 1986 Earth after learning that an alien probe is emitting signals that threaten the planet. Spock determines that the probe is attempting to communicate with humpback whales, a species extinct in the future.

The time-travel mission takes the crew to San Francisco, where marine biologist Gillian Taylor works at the Cetacean Institute. Kirk and Spock locate two humpback whales, George and Gracie, and bring them aboard the captured Klingon Bird of Prey.

The film’s San Francisco setting is especially notable because much of the story unfolds in recognizable modern locations, including the city’s streets and Golden Gate Park. A common mix-up is confusing San Francisco with the film’s 23rd-century setting aboard the USS Enterprise, which had been destroyed in the preceding film.
