In Star Trek (2009), which planet is destroyed by Nero?

The story behind the answer

Nero destroys Romulus in Star Trek (2009).

The film opens in the future, where the Romulan mining ship Narada emerges from a black hole and attacks the USS Kelvin. Nero is trying to save Romulus from a supernova and blames Ambassador Spock for failing to prevent the disaster. In the film’s backstory, Romulus is destroyed before Nero travels into the past.

Nero’s actions create an alternate reality, commonly called the Kelvin timeline. He later uses the red-matter technology connected with Spock’s failed rescue plan to destroy Vulcan, making Vulcan another major planetary tragedy in the film.

Because both Romulus and Vulcan are destroyed during the story, they are often confused in questions about Nero. Romulus is the planet whose destruction motivates his revenge; Vulcan is destroyed later in the altered timeline.
