In 'Spirited Away', what is the name of the boy who helps Chihiro?

The story behind the answer

In 'Spirited Away', the boy who helps Chihiro is named Haku.

Haku first appears as a mysterious boy who understands the spirit world and knows that Chihiro does not belong there. He warns her that she must cross back before the human world becomes inaccessible, then helps her survive after her parents are transformed into pigs. He also arranges work for her in Yubaba’s bathhouse, where visitors include powerful spirits and gods.

Haku is not simply a helpful stranger. His true identity is the spirit of the Kohaku River, a stream where Chihiro nearly drowned as a child. She remembers his name near the film’s climax, allowing him to break free from Yubaba’s control. The name “Haku” is therefore connected to both his river-spirit nature and the magical contract that has weakened his memory.

Viewers sometimes confuse Haku with the film’s unnamed human boy from Chihiro’s memories, but Haku is the white dragon who serves as Chihiro’s guide and ally. He is voiced by Miyu Irino in the original Japanese version.
