In Songkran tradition, Khorak is the Nang Songkran daughter associated with a Monday New Year’s Day.
Nang Songkran are seven legendary daughters of Thao Kabinlaphrom, with one daughter linked to each weekday. The daughter’s name is selected according to the weekday on which Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, begins. Khorak corresponds to Monday.
The story is connected with Thao Kabinlaphrom’s wager with Thammaban, a wise young man. After losing, Kabinlaphrom was beheaded, but his head was considered dangerously powerful, so his daughters carried it in a yearly procession. This legend helps explain why Nang Songkran figures appear in festival processions and cultural pageants.
The names and spellings can vary in English transliteration. Khorak may appear with alternative romanizations, so it should not be confused with Thungsa, the Sunday daughter, or Raksot, the Tuesday daughter.
