In Shrek Forever After, Rumpelstiltskin tricks Shrek into signing a magical contract.

The deal temporarily gives Shrek the chance to experience one day as the feared ogre he once was. In exchange, he unknowingly gives Rumpelstiltskin a day from his past, changing the timeline so that Shrek was never born into the life he remembers.

This alternate reality is the main setting of the film. Rumpelstiltskin rules Far Far Away, Fiona leads an ogre resistance, and Donkey does not recognize Shrek at first. The character had appeared earlier in the franchise but becomes the central antagonist in the fourth film, which was released in 2010.
