In 'Shark Tank', what percentage of a company is represented by a 1% equity offer?

The story behind the answer

In Shark Tank, a 1% equity offer represents one percent of a company.

Equity is an ownership share. When an entrepreneur offers a shark 1% equity, the entrepreneur is proposing to give the investor a one-percent ownership stake in exchange for money, expertise, distribution, publicity, or another form of support. The exact legal structure of a deal can later change during due diligence.

Shark Tank is the American version of the international Dragons’ Den format. Entrepreneurs present businesses and products to a panel of wealthy investors, who may offer capital in return for equity, royalties, debt arrangements, or combinations of those terms.

The show premiered on ABC in 2009. Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O’Leary, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec, and Lori Greiner are among its best-known investors. A televised handshake is not necessarily a completed investment, because the parties still need to verify finances and negotiate final documents.
